Dreadlock Wigs for Women: How to Choose a Style, Length and Cap

A dreadlock wig gives you a full head of locs without the months it takes to grow them. The locs are installed on a cap, so you put the wig on and go. This guide helps women choose a style, a length, a cap and a fibre, and covers care.

Dreadlock wig styles for women

  • Short afro dreadlock wigs: 4 to 16 inch locs with curly or twisted ends. Light and easy for everyday wear.
  • Butterfly and goddess locs: softer locs with loops or curly ends for a boho look.
  • Long faux dreads: 24 to 40 inch locs, often mixed with knotless braids or passion twists.
  • Colour locs: copper red, burgundy, ginger, blue, pink and ombre brown as well as natural black.

Choose a length

  • Short, 4 to 16 inches: crochet and headband styles. Light, with the least weight on your neck.
  • Mid, 20 to 26 inches: falls past the shoulders. A good first long style.
  • Long, 30 to 40 inches: the most dramatic. Locs carry more fibre than braids, so these weigh more.

Choose a cap

A lace front gives a natural hairline in front. A full lace cap lets you part the locs anywhere and tie them up. A 360 lace cap has lace all around the head. A crochet or headband wig has no lace and goes on fastest.

Synthetic or human hair

Most dreadlock wigs here use synthetic fibre that looks like matte, textured locs. A few use human hair, which costs more. The fibre is listed on each product page. Read wig fibres explained for what each grade means for heat.

Fake dreads or real dreadlocks

Real locs take months to form and years to grow long. A dreadlock wig lets you try the style first, switch lengths and colours, and protect your own hair underneath.

How to wear it

  • Wear the locs down for the full look.
  • Pull them into a high bun or ponytail on a full lace or 360 lace cap.
  • Add a scarf or headband for a finished look.

Care

  • Keep the wig on a stand so the locs hang straight.
  • Wash rarely, in cool water with a mild shampoo, and air dry fully. Locs hold water and dry slowly.
  • At night, remove the wig or wrap it in a satin bonnet.
  • Separate any locs that tangle at the root with your fingers.

Frequently asked questions

Are dreadlock wigs for women different from men's?

Most styles here are cut and sized for women. Shorter afro locs and twist styles also suit men. Check the cap size on each product page.

How natural does a dreadlock wig look?

Lace front and full lace caps give a natural hairline. Locs of varied thickness look less uniform and more natural.

Are these good for costumes?

They are made for everyday wear, so they look far more natural than a costume wig.

Should I sleep in a dreadlock wig?

It is better not to. Sleeping in a wig tangles the locs and strains the lace. Take it off at night.
